Embracing my Retro Kitchen

Value Village was very good to me this weekend.  Not only did I get what I needed for my halloween costume, but I also picked up 4 place settings worth of the greatest dishes! Even better, there are cups and saucers to match.  But even better than that, I also found a metal kettle that looks charming with the set.  My house is very dated, and there's not a lot I can do about the decor.  So I've tried to embrace the 70's nature of the house, despite normally being more of a 50's or 60's girl.  The print on these plates has colours that can fit into either era, so they work in this kitchen and will hopefully work in one I have more design control over too!

Speaking of design, as you can see I tried out a couple new fonts in this post.  I have been toying around with some design changes, including the fonts.  What do you think? Yay or nay?

  2. I love your finds! You're so lucky you live where thrift stores dont only sell clothes but items too. Thrift stores here only sell items of clothing :( Although we do have this one area in the city that sells a lot of items, for ok prices, but it's quite far and not easily accessible :(

    1. Oi, Camie, I FEEL you on thrift stores being inaccessible! In my town, they only have antique stores which only sell household items for very high prices. I don't have a car, but when my boyfriend is around we like to head to the nearest city, where we can hit up a couple thrift shops! The thrift stores here mostly sell clothing, but have shelves with household items as well. Usually nothing worth more than giggling at, but sometimes you strike gold! I guess that's the thrill of it, though, right??

      Thanks for stopping by!

    2. Definitely part of the thrill! Oh man, just talking about it makes me want to go all the way to the other city just to go thrift shopping for stuff! I actually went into a thrift store on the way home today and found myself walking out with two "new" tops... And I should've been saving. Damn. Haha

      You're cool! I've bookmarked you ;)

    3. Hey! It could be worse. You could have spent 5 times as much on brand new items. I really enjoy shopping, so if I can make the experience enjoyable and spend less, I'm still going to call it a win!

You and my boyfriend are the only people who think I'm "cool". My mother doesn't even mince words there :P Haha welcome aboard!

And he is probably more stylish than I am. I'm okay with it, there's no shame in losing to a champion :P.

    1. Welcome Laura!
Admittedly, when I call my (kitsch)en retro, what I really mean is "horridly dated". Wood everything, brown and taupe tile on the walls, brown and taupe linoleum on the floor, lace curtains... it's bad. But I'm filling it up with funny kitschy things that compliment and make the very best of what I have to work with! But I tell you, it REALLY makes me long for a kitchen I can paint!

    1. I'm hoping I can get a couple good pictures at a costume party I'm attending this weekend! Otherwise it's to the front yard with a tripod with me. Gotta have something to use for the costume party link up on Miss Indie!

  6. "(kitsch)en," heh.
Nice finds :) I had the same issue with the last house I lived in, but I think it just ended up making designing more fun, because everything was just. so. bad. I had a green shag carpet. Through the whole house. I feel your pain. Just gotta embrace whatchya got, and make it wonderful--which it looks like you're doing!
